About me and my use of Sony cameras

I primarily use Sony cameras for my professional work these days; a mix of A7 cameras as each one handles the same but gives me different sensor options. When I first got my Sony cameras there were a handful of zoom lenses and couple of prime lenses, though one thing that I liked about the Sony cameras was the ability to use any other lens ever made (pretty much). Some people have called the Sony e-mount an almost universal mount. One great advance came when several companies released EF-E mount adapters that supported AF. This may seem like witchcraft and it is a little bit. One problem with these adapters is that they use the phase detect sensors on the cameras. – which is great if your camera has phase detect sensors.. Not so good if not. Another disadvantage is that they lose some of the great features of Sony’s AF. Namely Face detection and eye-focus. As someone who shoots a lot of people then this feature has truly revolutionised how I shoot. No need to constantly move focus points around. The camera just locks on the nearest eye and voila!

I’m a wedding and commercial portrait photographer based in the rural county of Dorset. I’ve been a professional photographer for over 12 years now and run a studio based in Blandford Dorset.

When I first saw the MC-11 converter I knew this could be a real game changer for how I work. To open up the whole of the ART lens range (also the Sports and Contemporary lineup too) meant the gaps in the Sony lineup were gone! Also it meant I could re-use my existing lenses to work perfectly on my Sony cameras and have the best of both worlds! Sigma glass and Sony sensors!

The build quality is sublime.. Flocking on the inside to stop reflections.. I’ve not seen any reflections of flare, even shooting into sunlight.. Unlike with other adapters I’ve used. I also love the fact that I can update the firmware (already updated once!).

I love the 35mm focal length and had been looking at adding the Sony 35/1.4 lens to my setup, the 35/2.8 Sony lens I had discounted due to the 2.8 aperture. However I’d heard great things about the SIGMA 35/1.4 ART lens so when I got a chance to try this out with the MC-11 I couldn’t wait.

I was not disappointed. This lens is great from wide open and gets sharper across the frame from f/2. The ability to track eyes in portraits makes getting the eyes in focus so easy! The first thing I did was arrange a test shoot with a beautiful model friend of mine to see how it would work! See the photos to see how well it performs! I also took it along to some commercial food and drink photoshoots as I love the natural light and shallow depth of field for this kind of work. The SIGMA 35/1.4 ART lets me realise this!

I’ve also taken this combination along to some weddings too, nothing is a greater test of reliability and accuracy. Once again it’s performed flawlessly. I love being able to nail to focus on a portrait of the bride or the bridesmaids or a small child just by pressing a button.

Conclusion – Who’s the MC-11 for?

This MC-11 in combination with SIGMA 35mm, 50mm, 18-35mm ART and other lenses is going to be a great option for both Sony shooters and great for clients! The MC-11 is going to be the go-to adapter for Sony shooters, the build quality is as good or better than the Metabones adapter and loads better than the Commlite and Fotodiox ones I’ve had.

Are there any downsides? Not really no – of course people are going to ask have I tried it with other EF mount lenses – officially not supported of course.. But people will try it! Well I’ve tried 24 in an upcoming video test in conjunction with the awesome Castle Cameras and I also tried 6 more Sigma lenses at a show from the wonderfully friendly Sigma staff too. Although you don’t get the benefit of the class leading eye/face detection with the un-supported lenses you do get good performance in the whole – see my upcoming video for more details though 🙂

If you’re a Sony shooter then you need this adapter in your life. As well as the Sigma35mm and Sigma 50mm ART lenses being fabulous you also open up a whole range of lenses that means you have a genuine choice to Zeiss and Sony lenses! Viva la MC-11!

Colin and Leanne – Branksome Dene Community Rooms Handfasting Wedding

Colin and Leanne – Branksome Dene Community Rooms Wedding

A fun handfasting ceremony at Branksome Dene Community Rooms. Colin and Leanne got married in a handfasting ceremony with Family and friends all around them including the wolf-pack. There were some fun singing (luckily i didn’t have to sing). Tim was his usual awesome self and I got to do lots of candid photos of family and guests with some group photos too.
I love working with Tim as part of the Dorset Dream Team.. we work really well together and it shows the benefit of having 2 wedding photographers at your wedding to get those unexpected moments.
I’d shot at Branksome Dene Community rooms before late last year and it was good to be back. I saw a lot of familiar faces, from the bar staff to the catering folks from Signature Catering. It was great to be involved in such a fun wedding.

Here’s my alternative pictures from the day.

Austin and Hannah – Athelhampton House Wedding Photography

Austin and Hannah – Athelhampton House Wedding Photography

What a wonderful day it was for Austin and Hannah to get married. Both such lovely people too and it was a pleasure to photograph the other twin’s wedding ( I’d photographed Mark I’s wedding at the orchid hotel in bournemouth some years in the past). Austin has an immense lego collection which was fantastic to behold! Thanks for my gift austin! and double thanks for the bacon sandwich in the morning! I do like being fuelled by bacon.. and the cider later was superb too 🙂
It was good to be back at Athelhampton house for a wedding too as it has been a year or two since I was last there. Laura looked after me and my glamorous assistant david very well with some delicious food as always! Although there was a bit of cloud cover (ideal for photos) the weather was great for a wedding. I even managed to hang out of a window for the group shots from above. The fire in the hall was epic too.. you’ve got to love a roaring fire! I love the smell of fires and it makes it very welcoming for a wedding to have a fire going. As a bonus no-one got set ablaze so another successful wedding on that front too! Despite the cold night Hannah and Austin came out for a few photos in front of Athelhampton house at night with their cool light sabre umbrellas. A fun day and great to catch up with the family of folks there too. The photobooth went down really well too!
Anyway onto a couple of photos from the day including the night shot mentioned above and also the best group shot i’ve done in a while too. Did I mention there was a lego theme?

Awesome Sopley Mill Wedding Photography – Myles and Sam’s fun day!

Awesome Sopley Mill Wedding Photography – Myles and Sam’s fun day!

Yesterday saw me back at Sopley Mill to photograph the wedding of Myles and Sam with Mr Tim Churchill.. together we’re the dorset dream team of wedding photography! Myles and Sam’s wedding was on amazingly sunny day at Sopley Mill. Take a look at the photos and see how summer like it was! Everyone was smiling their heads off and it was a pleasure to see such an emotional ceremony too! In fact the whole day was very special and emotional! I feel truly blessed to be a part of such an amazing wedding. Sometimes my job is truly amazeballs! I’d started the day with my usual routine of bacon sandwiches and Gym workout so it was great to be raring to go and everyone made my job so much easier! Also see some of Tim literally jumping for joy in some of the photos! We like to enjoy the day with the guests at a wedding and this was no exception! Some great speeches and some crazy dancing in the evening too. I even had chance to do a little bit of video of the ceremony, speeches and crazy dancing together with some gopro video action – so stay tuned to see how that comes out later (I’ll add it to the blog post when it’s ready!) Thanks to merlins catering too who made sure we got some of the delicious buffet food too! and of course the staff at sopley mill for ensuring the smooth running of the day 🙂 There was also some cool duck races after the wedding too! a fun packed day for sure!

So without further ado here’s some of my favourites from the day (apologies for the volume! I hope you have fast interwebs!)

Jade and Kyle – Wedding Photography at the Winchester Hotel

Jade and Kyle – Wedding Photography at the Winchester Hotel

The second wedding this weekend saw me leave my blessed Dorset for a county I lived in for a good few years. Hampshire and also in Winchester where Jade and Kyle were to get married at the Winchester Hotel. The wedding was originally planned for the barn in burriton but at the last minute due to the venue closing then there was a last minute change of venue. Luckily we were in luck with an awesome venue and some awesome people. I was along to assist the fantastic Tim Churchill, always fun to be part of the dorset dream team. It’s always great to work with Tim and we work really well together. I loved that Kyle and his groomsmen had Lego men on their ties (I of course had my lego greggles with me :))
Jade had an awesome smile which was infectious. Her bridesmaids were all gorgeous too! Everyone was so friendly and welcoming – I love being part of weddings. The ceremony was emotional with an awesome poem by Jade’s sister! The ceremony was great and the gin drinks afterwards were inspired too. The super fun reception was great and the details in the wedding breakfast were superb too. The winchester hotel did a great job turning the room around too. I loved the plate names for the tables too especially the snappers one.

Me and tim went for food at a nearby pizza emporium.. the name was amazing.. ‘pizza pan!’ hahaha.
The speeches were great too, very emotional and heartfelt. There was also an awesome candy floss machine. I had the mojito one! It was awesome!

Here’s a selection of my favourites from Jade and Kyles awesome winchester hotel wedding! I hope you enjoy them as much as I had taking them.
