Tell me a little bit about yourself, what made you start?
Growing up I always had homemade cakes for my birthdays, and enjoyed baking with my mum too. My grandma herself was a wedding cake maker! I took a different path though, starting off as a Police Officer. But once I had children I took a break to spend more time with them before they started school.
I started by making my girls’ birthday cakes, and gradually ended was asked to make cakes for family and friends more and more, until one day I decided to branch out and set up my own business! After a while I took the decision to focus my work on my passion for prettiness and weddings, and haven’t looked back!

How long have you been doing your thing?
I ventured into the world of cake-making a little over 5 years ago, but only in the last 18 months steered my focus to the wedding industry.

What is the advantage of hiring a professional (you)?
Wow, there are so many advantages…where do I start?!
Firstly, you don’t have to do it yourself! Having produced and set up hundreds of cakes before, your cake-maker will create your wedding cake with passion and precision. They will deliver and set up your cake for you, with good knowledge of local venues. They will make sure any flowers and decorations are made food-safe, and ensuring it is looking its absolute best. You and your family/friends can concentrate on getting ready for your special day with peace of mind that your cake is in good hands – and it won’t collapse!
Your cake will be freshly made to order, with no preservatives, and the vast range of flavours are far beyond anything you could get in a supermarket. It will also be significantly larger than a supermarket cake – did you know that the average height of a modern wedding cake tier is around 5” tall, while a Marks & Spencer ‘deep’ sponge cake is actually only 8cm/3.15” tall?
It will also be completely unique – the style and design is completely up to you. Your cake maker is there to make sure your cake coordinates perfectly with the rest of your wedding – invitations, the dress, colours, flowers…the possibilities are endless. And if you have no idea what you want, they are on hand to give you plenty of ideas – it’s what they love to do!

What is your favourite cake/memory of making one?
All my cakes are my favourite! But I really love painting on cakes, and find it so therapeutic. I just get lost in time while I’m painting! I really enjoyed creating my watercolour peony painted cake – a technique that was self-taught. It looked terrible at first, but as the layers added up and I stepped away, it all finally came together. I often get lots of lovely uplifting comments about it too!

What do you do for fun?
Well, I absolutely love skiing. Just being up there on the mountains is so peaceful yet energising! But I don’t get to do that very often, as there’s not a lot of snow in Dorset! Mostly I just love to spend time with my little family – my husband and my girls. They’re 4 & 6 years old, and they’re the reason I started my own business in the first place…to be with them as much as possible!

Freddo or Marmite on toast?
That’s easy – always the Freddo!! I do like marmite, but I reckon I could easily live without it as long as I had a good supply of chocolate! Although what’s with the price of Freddo’s nowadays?!!
