Sigma 20mm f/1.4 ART first impressions

Welcome to my first impressions on the new wide angle fast aperture Sigma 20mm f/1.4 ART lens. This lens is the worlds first 20mm f/1.4 fast aperture lens and what a gem it is. This lens is built like a tank! The front element reminds me of my Nikon 14-24/2.8 with it’s bulging elements. When the lens first arrived I was impressed buy the bulk. Of course the downside of this is that it’s not a lightweight lens at 950g so there’s no such thing as a free lunch lens wise.

I’ve tried the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 out on the Canon 5d3 but mainly on the Sony a7RM2 via adapter. I am very impressed by the sharpness of the lens even wide open at f/1.4, the bokeh and rendering is lovely.

Focus is very fast and seems very accurate on my Sony A7R2, I’m looking forward to trying it with the sigma dock and canon 5d3 together with FoCal to see how well I can calibrate it at different distances (or verify that it’s spot on).

So first impressions are good. I can’t wait to get the chance to try this lens out when the skies clear and do some astrophotography in starry Dorset.

My Children helpfully posted for new lens day and I also managed to get to a local church I’d been meaning to go and visit to photograph, it was very wet and dark outside but the Sigma focussed perfectly:
